Ski with Ellensburg XC Ski Club

Wenatchee Ridge Rd

This will be an opportunity for WSTC club members to join the Ellensburg XC Ski Club and enjoy a group ski on good snow along a truly spectacular but not technically demanding route. Many of you are familiar with the Wenatchee Ridge Rd. ( USFS Rd. 800) as a ski tour but for some it will be new terrain. Our website: www.geocities.com/ellensburgskiclub includes a route description and map for this tour.

The forecast for the remainder of this week is for COLD and partly cloudy. Remember to dress in layers, and bring a hearty lunch, perhaps including a hot drink in a thermos.

There is no set "destination" for this tour. It's all good, no matter you ski one mile or six. For the most ambitious among us, there is the option to ski all the way to Old Blewett Pass and then down the old highway to it's junction with SR 97. This would be approximately a ten mile tour.

SnoPark permits are required for parking at Blewett Pass. Non-SnoPark parking is available on the north side of the pass. (DO NOT park at the weather station plow-out where there is a strictly enforced 15 minute limit on parking.)

For those interested in carpooling from Ellensburg, our standard meeting place is in the parking lot across Univ. Way from Barge Hall (CWU). Come by at 9:00 AM on Sat. morning to see if you can give or get a lift.

For more information, please call Pico Cantieni at 509-674-4632.

Tronsen Basin Tour with Ellensburg X-C Ski Club

The Ellensburg XC Ski Club is hosting a tour of Tronsen Basin (Blewett Pass). There are many fine routes in this area and we will tailor our tour to the energy levels, ambitions and skills within the group. We will keep open the option to split the group and conduct two or more tours which can meet up at a suitable lunch spot in the basin.

One additional option would be a tour over Blewett Pass ridge to the Pipe Cr. Snopark. (car dropped at Snopark). Bring sturdy touring skis and boots. Trail breaking may be required.

Ellensburgians should meet at 9:00 AM in the parking lot across from Barge Hall on University Way for carpooling to the pass. We will try to hit the trail by 10:00 AM. Because of uncertainties re: plowing and parking at Tronsen we will meet at the summit Snopark and move on from there to whatever parking is available at Tronsen.

A map of Tronsen trails is available on our website. Look under "Areas closed to Snowmobiles" at lower right of page. For more info.: Contact Pico Cantieni at 509-674-4632 or pico@eburg.com .

Salmon la Sac area
18 miles NW of Cle Elum up the Cle Elum River Valley

Ski with Ellensburg XC Ski Club
UPDATE: This trip has been moved to SATURDAY (was originally planned for Sunday)

Here is an update from the organizer:
I'd like to see us heading out from the Salmon la Sac snopark by about 10:00AM on Saturday. It looks as if we're getting into a classic mid-winter freeze/thaw cycle which makes an "alpine" start undesirable. There's plenty of parking at the snopark but carpooling would make sense for the drive up the Cle Elum valley. There's room to drop one or two cars at the jct. of Bullfrog Rd. with Hwy. 903 just south of Roslyn. (good coffee here also). Contact info. is: Pico Cantieni, 509-674-4632 or pico@eburg.com

---------------------------------------------

The route will include the groomed trails in the Salmon la Sac campground and “section 9”, the property recently acquired by the forest service from Plum Cr. Timber.

For those so inclined, there will also be an opportunity to ski the ungroomed Waptus loop trail which connects the new and old Waptus Lake trailheads. This is a route through really BIG and impressive timber with only a moderate elevation gain of 285 ft. in about 1.5 miles. If conditions permit, i.e. not too much fresh snow to plow through and not too much tree drip, hardier skiers may want to push on up the Waptus Lake trail to Hour Creek, a 5.5 mile round trip with about 500 ft. of elevation gain. Another option, dependent upon conditions and energy levels, would be an after-lunch tour south along the west side of Lake Cle Elum on FS Rd. #4301.

This tour starts at the French Cabin Cr. snopark just south of Salmon la Sac and offers fine panoramic views up and down the lake. Snopark permit required for parking.

Call Pico at 509-674-4632 (evenings) for more details

Tour of the Methow: A celebration of skiing

On Saturday, February 17th, Methow Valley Nordic will be hosting the fourth annual tour of the Methow. In this non-competitive event, there are no bibs, no watches and no racing. Skiers choose from 20, 30, 50, or 80 (!) kilometers. The ski is made up of three sections. Section 1 (30k) travels the challenging (hilly) rendezvous trail section before arriving at the Mazama community center for a refueling stop. Section 2 (20k) begins and ends in Mazama, traversing the mostly flat land beautiful trails of the upper Methow Valley. Section 3 (30k) travels from Mazama to Winthrop on the Methow Community Trail. You can ski 1, 2, or all 3 sections. This event is free to mvnordic members, and is only $10 for non-members. MV Nordic provides a shuttle, food, t-shirt, and trail marking. Come out and celebrate skiing and the spectacular Methow Valley Trail System.

Hog Loppet Spectator Tour With Ellensburg XC Ski Club

For those not participating in the Hogloppet but wanting to partake of a bit of the excitement and enthusiasm sparked by the event, we're proposing a "spectators' tour" starting and ending near Blewett Pass. If snow conditions are favorable, we can start our tour from the Pipe Cr. snopark just south of the pass. If the off-piste conditions are nasty (as they have been recently) we can park at the Tronsen Basin plow-outs and reach the groomed Hogloppet route more easily and quickly from there. In either case, our objective will be to ski the latter part of the groomed course "backwards" and cheer on the skiers coming from Mission Ridge. In order to watch the fast front-runners go by we would need to be on the course by about 10 AM. Our departure time from our parking spot would depend on snow and weather conditions. If you're interested in being part of the Hogloppet spectators' tour, please call or e-mail Pico Cantieni at 509-674-4632 or pico@eburg.com.

Overnight Ski Trip with Ellensburg Cross Country Ski Club

Table Mt. A-Frame

The Table Mountain A-frame (a.k.a. Boeing Cabin) has been reserved by the club for the weekend of Mar. 17/18. This has been another popular trip in past years. The cabin sits on Table Mt. about seven miles south and 2000’ above Blewett Pass. On one occasion we talked Tim into giving folks a lift in his snowcat. To do this again, we would need a separate one-time permit for the snowcat and this has not yet been procured. An alternative which has also worked quite well in past years would be to have Pico and “Old Yeller” haul gear and food to the cabin. The seven mile, 2000' ski up to the cabin is over a moderate-grade groomed snowmobile route and is quite pleasant if one is not encumbered with a giant overnight pack. By mid-March the days are longer and temps. milder than in mid-winter. There’s lots of opportunity for long or short tours out from the cabin and the views from the rim of Table Mountain are spectacular. The cabin sleeps ten and comes with fire wood for the wood stove and a propane Coleman stove for cooking. No running water. Privy.
