Nordic Ski Patrol
WSTC members have been providing Nordic Patrol at Mount Rainier National Park
since 1993. This volunteer opportunity is open to club members with intermediate
skiing skills. Patrol is done in conjunction with Mount Rainier National Park
which provides a house in Longmire, a truck, 2-way radios and work direction.
Patrol duties typically include marking trails, setting signs, roping
off cliff edges, and assisting the public with directions. The patrol also
supports Park personnel in rarer instances of lost or injured visitors. Patrol
is in radio contact with the Park throughout the day.
The trails and
slopes around Paradise from Nisqually Vista Loop to Glacier Vista to Mazama
Ridge and Reflection Lakes are the focus of Nordic Patrol. On days when snow
keeps the road to Paradise closed, Patrol heads out on the trails around
Longmire.
Patrol is staffed on winter weekends and selected holidays.
The season starts as soon as the meadows and trails are covered with enough snow
and can extend well into April.
